A whole chapter,
and part of another.
Readers of John Howard’s Against the Grain encountered a shortened version of Huysmans’s novel. Chapter VI was omitted entirely, along with part of Chapter IX. Those cuts removed some of the most troubling evidence of Des Esseintes’s treatment of other people, as well as material about his sexual life.
Chapter VI: the Auguste Langlois episode
Des Esseintes describes a plan to cultivate expensive habits in a teenage boy, then withdraw the money that supports them. He hopes the boy will turn to crime. The episode exposes a cruelty that a reading confined to his books, perfumes and furnishings could miss.
Chapter IX: desire and recollection
The full chapter includes Des Esseintes’s memories of women and of an encounter with a young man. Restoring the omitted material allows readers to follow these recollections together, including the tensions between his desires and his religious education.
